PalmOne adds flash memory, new battery on Tungsten E2
PalmOne Inc. is expected Wednesday to release an update to its most popular handheld with the introduction of the Tungsten E2. PalmOne was loathe to change too many details on the popular model, which was its best-selling personal digital assistant (PDA) in the U.S. during the holiday shopping season of 2004, said Raj Doshi, a product marketing manager with PalmOne. The Milpitas, California, company installed a brighter display, Bluetooth wireless technology, and flash memory on the unit, but left many features of the Tungsten E intact, he said.

Apple reports $290 million profit; 5.3 million iPods ship
Apple Computer on Wednesday reported a profit of US$290 million for the fiscal second-quarter of 2005. The company said that 1,070,000 Macintosh units and 5,311,000 iPods were shipped during the quarter, which ended March 26, 2005. This represents a 43 percent increase in CPU units and a 558 percent increase in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

SiK ram din routes iPod to audio, FireWire
SiK Inc. on Tuesday introduced the ram din, a portable line-out and FireWire adapter for Apple's iPod, iPod photo and iPod mini. The device connects to the Dock Connector found on the bottom of these devices and provides two breakout seven inch cables. Line-level audio output is provided through a right angle 1/8-inch (3.5mm) stereo plug, and the other cable terminates in a six-pin female FireWire 400 connector. SiK claims the ram din is useful for iPod users who want to connect their player to an external headphone amplifier or other device with line input, and power the device using FireWire as needed. The ram din is available in black or white and costs US$21.95.

Microsoft talks Tiger compatibility

Wireless USB 1.0 spec to be finalized next month
Version 1.0 of the Wireless USB (Universal Serial Bus) specification, which is being promoted as the successor to the USB data transfer method between electronics devices, should be approved by mid-May, Intel Corp. said last week. QuickerTek Inc.'s latest wireless networking transceiver is a 27dBm model for Apple's Mac mini. The company claims that with this transceiver in place, Mac mini users can extend their wireless networking reception up to a mile. The device boosts the Mac mini's wireless networking RF output from 30mW to 500mW, the maximum allowed. It works with 802.11g and 802.11b networking and ships with mounting brackets, adapter cable, wall-mounted power supply and utility software CD. It doesn't require drivers to work. The 27dbM transceiver for Mac minis costs US$180.

THHdesign has released iWapper 2.0, a new version of their Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) server for Mac OS X v10.3. iWapper generates Web sites suitable for WAP display, increasingly used on cell phones and other handheld devices. The new release of iWapper adds support for Really Simple Syndication (RSS) news feeds and dynamic text file updates. It also generates an automatic WAP index page. Many other new features have been added as well. iWapper 2.0 is free to use if you'll display a banner on your page; otherwise it costs US$15 to register.

Avid Technology Inc. subsidiary M-Audio has introduced iControl, a USB-based hardware interface for GarageBand. The device features dedicated transport buttons and jog wheel, eight rotray encoders that can be assigned to track functions like volume and pan (or GarageBand's EQ or any other Audio Unit plug-in). Also included are dedicated mute, solo and record-enable buttons, plus a master volume fader. It costs US$179.95. System requirements call for any Mac running GarageBand 2.
