    PalmOne adds flash memory, new battery on Tungsten E2

    PalmOne Inc. is expected Wednesday to release an update to its most popular handheld with the introduction of the Tungsten E2. PalmOne was loathe to change too many details on the popular model, which was its best-selling personal digital assistant (PDA) in the U.S. during the holiday shopping season of 2004, said Raj Doshi, a product marketing manager with PalmOne. The Milpitas, California, company installed a brighter display, Bluetooth wireless technology, and flash memory on the unit, but left many features of the Tungsten E intact, he said.

    Apple reports $290 million profit; 5.3 million iPods ship

    Apple Computer on Wednesday reported a profit of US$290 million for the fiscal second-quarter of 2005. The company said that 1,070,000 Macintosh units and 5,311,000 iPods were shipped during the quarter, which ended March 26, 2005. This represents a 43 percent increase in CPU units and a 558 percent increase in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

    Apple on Tuesday announced the ship date for its next generation operating system, Mac OS X Tiger. The operating system, which the company says includes hundreds of enhancements, will be available to customers beginning at 6:00 pm on Friday, April 29, 2005, at special events held at the company's retail locations and authorized retailers. Pre-orders for Tiger are being taken today at the online Apple Store — Tiger will cost US$129.

    AudioOutfitters LLC's ezGear is now offering the ezLink Shuffle, a USB 2.0 extension cord for Apple's iPod shuffle. It's molded in iPod white and measures four feet long. The ezLink Shuffle costs US$14.

    TLA Systems on Tuesday released DragThing 5.6, its alternative dock application for Mac OS X. The updated version sports full support for Mac OS X v10.4, due out on April 29th. Other new features have been added also. DragThing 5.6 is a free update for registered users of DragThing 5 and is available for immediately download. It costs US$29 to register and requires Mac OS X v10.2 (though Tiger-specific features require Mac OS X v10.4).

    SiK ram din routes iPod to audio, FireWire

    SiK Inc. on Tuesday introduced the ram din, a portable line-out and FireWire adapter for Apple's iPod, iPod photo and iPod mini. The device connects to the Dock Connector found on the bottom of these devices and provides two breakout seven inch cables. Line-level audio output is provided through a right angle 1/8-inch (3.5mm) stereo plug, and the other cable terminates in a six-pin female FireWire 400 connector. SiK claims the ram din is useful for iPod users who want to connect their player to an external headphone amplifier or other device with line input, and power the device using FireWire as needed. The ram din is available in black or white and costs US$21.95.

    HP adds photo iPods to lineup

    Hewlett-Packard on Tuesday announced the addition of two new Apple iPod from HP models to its lineup of digital music players. HP is now carrying 30GB and 60GB iPod models. The company isn't calling them iPod photos, however — it's keeping the "Apple iPod from HP" moniker, although it notes the photo transporting and viewing capabilities of both devices, which are functionally identical to their Apple-branded counterparts.

    Microsoft talks Tiger compatibility

    Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday offered details about the compatibility of its Mac products with Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger." Apple announced earlier on Tuesday that Tiger will ship on Friday, April 29, 2005.     Wireless USB 1.0 spec to be finalized next month

    Version 1.0 of the Wireless USB (Universal Serial Bus) specification, which is being promoted as the successor to the USB data transfer method between electronics devices, should be approved by mid-May, Intel Corp. said last week. The Wireless USB specification is for 480Mbps (bits per second) transfer speed over distances of about three meters and it will work at lower speeds up to a distance of about 10 meters.

    QuickerTek offers Mac mini wireless transceiver

    QuickerTek Inc.'s latest wireless networking transceiver is a 27dBm model for Apple's Mac mini. The company claims that with this transceiver in place, Mac mini users can extend their wireless networking reception up to a mile. The device boosts the Mac mini's wireless networking RF output from 30mW to 500mW, the maximum allowed. It works with 802.11g and 802.11b networking and ships with mounting brackets, adapter cable, wall-mounted power supply and utility software CD. It doesn't require drivers to work. The 27dbM transceiver for Mac minis costs US$180.

    iWapper adds RSS support

    THHdesign has released iWapper 2.0, a new version of their Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) server for Mac OS X v10.3. iWapper generates Web sites suitable for WAP display, increasingly used on cell phones and other handheld devices. The new release of iWapper adds support for Really Simple Syndication (RSS) news feeds and dynamic text file updates. It also generates an automatic WAP index page. Many other new features have been added as well. iWapper 2.0 is free to use if you'll display a banner on your page; otherwise it costs US$15 to register.

    M-Audio offers iControl interface for GarageBand

    Avid Technology Inc. subsidiary M-Audio has introduced iControl, a USB-based hardware interface for GarageBand. The device features dedicated transport buttons and jog wheel, eight rotray encoders that can be assigned to track functions like volume and pan (or GarageBand's EQ or any other Audio Unit plug-in). Also included are dedicated mute, solo and record-enable buttons, plus a master volume fader. It costs US$179.95. System requirements call for any Mac running GarageBand 2.
