in 1940, Michigan State University with a B.A. in 1945 and from Wayne State University with an M.A. in 1966. He worked for the Detroit League for the Handicapped, Michigan American Heart Assoc. and retired from the National American Heart Assoc.

in 1983. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, where he had served on the vestry. He was Past President and was presently Vice President of the Mended Hearts, Dallas Chapter 30. He was very active in the Visiting Program of the Chapter. He was Southwest Regional Director for National Mended Hearts.

Roy, 25 Boston native taught in S. Korea Duncan Douglas Roy, who recently moved from Boston to Seoul, South Korea, to teach English and to study Eastern philosophy, died of heart failure in Bangkok, Thailand, last Wednesday. He was 25. Born in Boston, Mr. Roy had lived in the Back Bay-Beacon Hill area before moving to Seoul five months ago.

He was a 1989 graduate of Boston College High School and a 1995 graduate of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, where he had earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy. After returning home for several months, Mr. Roy set out for South Korea, where he taught English. He went to Bangkok to teach and further his studies on Asian thought and religion.

Mr. Gabriel was born in Union City, N.J., and grew up in Revere. He attended Revere public schools. In March 1941, Mr. Gabriel enlisted in the Army.

A sergeant, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received three Bronze Stars for his service in the European-AfricanMiddle East theater campaign. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. After the war, Mr. Gabriel worked with his father and brothers at the family photo engraving business, Kendall Engraving, in Kenmore Square in Boston.

In 1955, he began working in the Boston Herald's photo engraving department. He later went to work at the Globe. After retiring from the Globe, Mr. Gabriel continued to work as a substitute photo engraver for both the Globe and the Herald, until he was hired full time by the Herald. Mr.

Gabriel retired for the second time in October 1990. He leaves his wife, Ruth (Drake); three daughters, Donna Penney of Billerica, Diane Tritto and Eugenia Gabriel, both of Revere; a son, Eugene Jr. of Tyngsborough; a sister, Marion Bedrosian of Watertown; a brother, Walter of Wellesley; and five grandchildren. He was a former president of the Westborough Development Co. during the 1960s and was a member of the Westborough Chamber of Commerce. In 1967, he moved to Manchester-by-the-Sea. He served on the Manchester Finance Committee for several years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Manchester and the Massachusetts Independent Insurance Agency Association. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Kowalski) Martin; his mother, Clarisse (Brunelle) Martin of West Hartford; two children, Edward J.

He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1941 to 1948, served two terms as a Boston city councilor, and until his retirement in 1981 he ran the law firm, Lanigan Murray, with James P.

Murray. Mr. Lanigan was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church of the West End of Boston and member of the West End House. He leaves his wife, Dorothy (Carroll) Lanigan; a sister, Margaret Deehan of South Boston; and several nieces and nephews.

She received her master's degree in business administration from Boston University in 1985. One of her first jobs was with Western Union, where within two months she was the top saleswoman in her office.

Her sales success continued at Codex-Motorola, where she worked for 14 years and was a sixtime member of the firm's President's Club. For the last two years she worked for Cisco Systems and received awards for sales leadership. Mrs. Shulman was active in many community activities. She was a member of Temple Emanuel of Newton.

She was a life member of Temple Emanuel's Sisterhood, the Brandeis National Women's Committee and the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged. She leaves her husband, Steve, and two sons, Harrison and Andrew of Brookline; her parents, Robert and Theresa Blumberg of Athens, a brother, Jerry Blumberg of Sarasota, her grandmother, Sarah Loef of Athens, and her parents-in-law, Leon and Cynthia Shulman of Newton. Schmitz, 76 Retired systems analyst Bernard F. Schmitz of Framingham, a retired systems analyst at Honeywell in Billerica, died of bladder cancer Saturday in Metrowest Medical Center in Natick. He was 76. Born in Denver, Mr. Schmitz was a graduate of 'St.

Joseph's High School in Denver. He went on to graduate from Colorado University with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. Later, he graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a master's degree in computer science. During World War II, he served in the Navy in the Pacific. Mr.

Schmitz worked for Honeywell as a systems analyst for 15 years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of VFW Post 929 and the Clog Trotters of Framingham, a senior citizens group that does a dance called "The He leaves his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth (Betty) (Newsham); two daughters, Margaret Walsh of Duxbury and Teresa Desmond of Orlando, two sons, Paul of Berkeley Heights, N.J., and Thomas of Framingham; two sisters, Patricia Mayns of Pine, and Shirley Spahn of Denver; and eight grandchildren. Matthew Maxon, 73 Worked for nonprofit groups Matthew Maxon, formerly of Brookline, a World War II veteran who worked for nonprofit organizations devoted to health, died at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. He was 73. Born in Brookline, he graduated from Brookline High School in 1940, and from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in 1945. He received a master's degree from Wayne State University in 1966.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Signal Corps in England, France, and Germany. Mr. Maxon retired from the National American Heart Association in 1983. He also had worked for the Detroit League for the Handicapped and the Michigan American Heart Association. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, where he had served on the vestry.

He was past president and was vice president of the Mended Hearts, Dallas Chapter 30. He was southwest regional director for National Mended Hears. He leaves his wife, Barbara Johnson Maxon of Richardson, Texas; three sisters, Geraldine E. Maxon of Brookline, Elaine Burnham of Lincoln, and Gladys E. Lawton of Tucson; one brother, John of Penn Valley, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
